You go to number #4 and pull out the rod. After some work you manage to hook up the belt and retrieve it without mishaps.
This belt still looks and feels like the correct one.
So what's next?

Only one item needed in this Hall as I recall it. Take it to the portal and you will be able to move on.
You will need to get down first and then you will need to decide what to keep and what to bring with you, since I will apply equipment limits again once you leave the hall.
The merchant you visited earlier buys back items at half the price, or you could simply gift them to the dwarfs for their help. Your pick.

It's gnomes who have fishing rods, not dwarves! Dwarves would fish with explosives.
But I'll give my pals everything I bought except the cat's paws (unless I can't fit them in my inventory, in which case I'll give them away too).
