Ok.
What's the plan thereafter?
Move around and observe the belts?
You need some way of reaching the belts to actually retrieve one, and currently you have none. (Your arms will not reach 1,5 out from the ledge.)

Don't I actually need to collect the correct belt? I may need to climb back down and obtain more equipment after all.

Yes, you need it.
Might be an idea to check out the belts on dispaly so you know if you need another tour to the portal as well.

Okay, since I'm already up here I'll spend a round (or however long it takes) looking at the various designs to identify the one I actually need, and develop some sort of idea how to get it.

General perception roll for how good you remember the belt: Outcome is poor and you are generally aware that the distraction while speaking with the dwarves and the near falls have taken their toll on your memory.
So ... in short. You're readings will be more prone to error than you'd like, and you really should refresh your memory at the portal.
While moving between the sections you have reason to be thankful for your safety measures. When moving to the far section you slip and fall and the fall is only hindered by your grapple and hook. Still you take a painful hit against the wall and gain some bruises while losing 5 Health.
There are 9 sections, each of the 9 sections has one look-alike belt with similar design. Your readings are, as you move along.
1. This is not the correct one and you are reasonable sure about it.
2. This is not the correct one but you are unsure about it.
3. Your hunch: This is not the correct one.
4. This is the correct one and you are fairly sure about it.
5. This is not the correct one and you are reasonable sure about it.
6. You are unsure of this one. Maybe it is the correct one.
7. You do not know what to make of this one at all.
8. You do not know what to make of this one at all.
9. This is not the correct one and you are sure about it.
While moving to the other side, you have reached the other ladder.
You want to move down by using that ladder?

As the maximum a health potion can restore is 12 points I'll use one now. If you can notify me whenever my total damage exceeds 12 I'd appreciate it.
Can I go back to 4 and double-check?

It's one reading each time after visiting the portal. So you must visit it again first.
You didn't bring your Healing potions with you, but I will apply the healing when you get down.
The healing potions are +5d3 so max is actually 15, and average 10.
Going down now?

You're right, I went even more minimalist on the equipment front than I thought. Yes, going down now, retrieve and use healing potions, check dwarves are happy to continue looking after my stuff, re-examine portal, re-climb rope. That should keep me going for a few rounds. Let me know when you've caught up.

I'm leaving the rope where it is for the return journey and using the ladder to go back down. I already know 4 is PROBABLY the correct belt but I can't be certain.
Not sure what else I might have missed...?

Not sure what else I might have missed...? I'll let you think about it. The climb down goes overall well. You have a slight mishap when finishing the last stretch and bruise your hands for 1 health. Total lost health: 8 + 3 + 5 + 1 = 17 1 Potion restores: 13 Health. So you are minus 1 Health potion and at 4 damage. I'll tally up the rounds later. You did spend some rounds in this trip up and a couple of more laters. The dwarves are happy to watch over your things for as long as you like. They are after all stranded here for some hours to come. * checking your list * Portal is next. So you walk over there. How long do you want to spend there studying the belt? (From 3 activity and upwards.) (( Also, after I have how long you want to study the belt in the portal ... I'll let you think about what is missing for a day or so before continuing by returning to the ladder and climbing up. ))

How long ?

How long will it take to clearly commit the image to memory? Is two rounds excessive?
Do I get a hint regarding what I've missed out on? Because I'm none the wiser!

Ohhh... the grabby implements on the walls! Forgot all about those.
Can I scrub the previous plan and get one of them instead?
