This is Sport Relief night in the UK but I've always had difficulty with multi-millionaires asking "normal" members of the public to donate money to charity.
Considering I have been diagnosed with terminal cancer on two separate occasions, and survived the side-effects of massively destructive yet lifesaving chemotherapy regimes as well as what can only be described as "severe" surgery which has permanently affected me, I have to admit I owe a lot to cancer research charities. As someone fortunate enough to not only survive such an experience but to have gone on to earn a decent living, I can contribute a reasonable amount to cancer research and care charities each month.
I am concerned that there are numerous celebrity-endorsed charity campaigns which encourage people to contribute money to "good causes" which are yet to be determined. Instead, I would ask anyone reading this to think about which charities are most important to them and contribute directly towards their work on a regular basis. Even a small monthly donation can make a huge difference.
I'm not asking anyone reading this to post to say "I give X to Y," I just want to ask you all to consider supporting a charity that means something to you personally on a regular basis rather than making a one-off contribution to these telethon appeals. And if you already make such contributions, God bless. Your money will be put to good use.
Thank you.

Good thoughts. As social networking grows, I guess it's easier to be made aware of various causes, but easier to get lost in other people's thann champion your own.
