Pappa Smurf was supposed to be a well accomplished wizard with over 500 years of experience in magic. Gargamel was a flunko of a wizard who didn't even get a diploma from the wizard school. Gargamel kept giving the smurfs a hard time, he was always trying to catch them to turn into gold or eat. I don't see why Pappa Smurf didn't just blast Gargamel with a fireball or lightning bolt or reduce Gargamel to a pile of dust with a beam of disintegration or use Power Word Kill. If Pappa Smurf is against such violent acts he can at least cast a confusion spell and make Gargamel leave the forest or use a wish spell to wish him away, or permanently get rid of Gargamel somehow or another.
