I agree entirely with Greywolf's point that if fans wanted to spell something in one of my creations differently, my response would be "tough". Heh.

<chuckles> I think if you weren't looking for a fight, signing off on your previous post with 'tough' was probably impolitic. Excellent points all the way around though. In the end, Grey Wolf's quite right. Joe's decision trumps the whole lot and when you write in the setting in an official capacity his word is Law. (That said, I sorta prefer it without the 'r' too! ) -August Tough was as an example of how I approach things in my world. I've had people argue setting details with me on and offline, in the end my response is...this is how it is: tough. Good to see you August I think writing in Magnamund is like walking on eggshells, you have the way fans see it and the way that Joe sees it...even on the Bonus Adventures for the re-released books, Joe has the #1 final say.

Yeah, that was quoted as an example of something that happened to me. I look on it, in hindsight now, as amusing in a way...but still just as irritating. It was like when I wrote the Death book for Dark Quest, someone actuallly tried to argue details...they were determined 100% they had it quoted correctly. Until they double-checked the book and said, "Oh, guess you were right, oh well - whatevers." I had to laugh

Yeah, but he used to spell it like that!*runs**hides for a while*Aaaaaaaaaanyway, putting aside the matter of the 'r' - which, yeah, okay, I brought up in the first place - what's waaaaaaaaay more important is the article itself, which I thought after all this debate I really ought to actually look at. What I've read thus far is good stuff, and if I might quote a particularly cool bit to try and entice any who have yet to download it so to do: At night when the grey smoke from the city chimneys has lessened, the city is transformed into a glittering wonderland....The city lights up as if thousands of tiny fireflies have made their home in the safety of the walls....It's kind of nice being between RPGs, with the one to come apparently aiming to be so simple - rules and stats can be put aside, and articles such as this can concentrate on bringing to life places that may previously have been little more than a name on a map. Very cool.

Very cool. Yeah, basically without saying too much re: the new RPG, it really is a simple system that is far more in line with Joe's original gamebooks system wise and flavour wise too. So the plan was to write these articles to expand on the canon info in Joe's world and flesh out the bits that Joe hasn't fleshed out or really doesn't have time to. Some things like Toran for instance are trickier than Ansk was, mainly because there's a bit of conflicting info here and there when you're trying to do research. I'm actually really looking forwards to when I can write the guide to Hikas, because I actually was given carte blanche for that place for Book 8. The next one will be in progress pretty soon, possibly Tyso though I'm not sure yet. I'd like to revist Port Bax of course, fix a few things that were in the original and expand on that a little more...not sure though yet...that's one I have to talk to Charlie about.

Hmm, that sounds like you had some ideas that Joe shot down. I'm curious to know what some of these ideas were. Possibly storylines that didn't mesh with his timeline of events in Magnamund's history?

You usually never get that far, it's a case of sticking as much as you can to the canon and hoping that something you change/alter is approved. There are certain things you can do and some that you can't, in my case, I had to use Anskavern for instance but I could add new personalities and even some events.

Ah, I see.
I was looking through Anskavern again, and was wondering about Turla Ree. It says he is a "Sommlending aspirant to the Kai Monastery." Does that mean he was an actual ranked Kai, or he just dreamed about joining? Because it'd make for some interesting storylines if LW wasn't really the last of the Kai.
Similarly, in Port Bax, Laughing Fire is an "ex- Kai Monk that failed in his teachings" who extensively trained Misha, daughter of the Thieves' Guild head. What's keeping him from becoming a Kai again? Was he stripped of his powers, or could he possibly start teaching the ways of the Kai (or just the skills to gifted members of the Thieves' Guild) if something happened to LW?
