Good review. You made me want to play the game.
You also caused me to shop for something. When I Googled Soul Blazer to see if it got a PAL release, it also brought up ActRaiser. Always wanted to play that, but never did.

ActRaiser is one of those games I've gotten halfway through then stopped playing for no readily identifiable reason. Just too many games, too little time I guess.

I got Act Raiser when it was re-released on the Wii Arcade thingie, having never played it before. Got all the way through it and loved the hell out of it ;D

Oh yeah, Act Raiser is a fun game allying simulation à la SimCity and normal platform action. Still have the original SNES version. ;D

Act Raiser also happens to be the prequel to Soul Blazer, which was then followed by Illusion of Gaia and concluded in Terranigma.

From the descriptions, I can see the Soul Blazer/ActRaiser connection, but Illusion and Terranigma? I'm pretty familiar with both of them, and I don't see it. Admittedly, SB's 'reviving the world a bit at a time' thing did bring Terranigma to mind, but that's a fairly slim connection for a prequel/sequel relationship, surely?

No, they're direct sequels. There's a sequence in Illusion of Gaia where you even fight Metal Mantis and he mentions being sealed away by the Blazer aeons ago. Also, many of the sprites are the same, and there's some re-occuring characters, like Turbo the dog.
