Ive heard the Eragon story as being a ripoff of Starwars, that it is more or less Star Wars in a medieval fantasy setting, a boy has a mentor that dies, he gets a cool sword, ect. As it is, I think Lone Wolf is more like Starwars than Eragon. I am not saying that Lone Wolf is a Starwars ripoff but there are the similarities, Lone Wolf gets a cool sword, he has special powers, he has his mentors that all die (the Kai that died when the darklords attacked) ect. Ive posted this before about Lone Wolf being much like Starwars but for some reason people criticize Eragon as being too much like Starwars. If you ask me though, I think that neither should be criticized although they both have their similarities

Doesn't all heroes get a cool weapon and special abilities ?
I mean the above is mostly a given for nearly every hero in one form or another. If not then, you would probably call them something else than a hero.
The Jedi were not wiped out. They were simply reduced in numbers and powers.
Luke were never taught in the Force until he was nearly an adult while Lone Wolf was trained from age 7 to 15, until he was nearly an adult.
Luke is given a sword as part of his training. I.e. it is part of being a jedi. Lone Wolf has to quest for everything he gained. There is only ONE Sommerswerd.

And Luke always whines. He whines about Power converters. He whines about his pathetic hand being cut off. He whines about his daddy being a big baddie of the dark side. He whines about not getting enough money for his hovercraft. When he's not whining, he's kissing his sister.
Lone Wolf NEVER whines. He just takes it or dishes it out. Never whines.
Lone Wolf is nothing like Star Wars. Lone Wolf could kick Luke any day of the week. With Psi-surge and without a weapon. Luke is pathetic. Lone Wolf rocks.
George Lucas sucks. Joe Dever rocks.
And the Cener Druids rule all.

Well what I don't get is why so many people were saying that Eragon was a Starwars ripoff. There are many things that follow the same general storyline of Starwars, and from what I know, George Lucas followed other famous storylines with Starwars, such as the legend of King Arthor as well as certain greek myths.

... and, cinematically speaking, Star Wars "borrows" from everything from Kurosawa to Nazi propaganda films.

Well what I don't get is why so many people were saying that Eragon was a Starwars ripoff. There are many things that follow the same general storyline of Starwars, and from what I know, George Lucas followed other famous storylines with Starwars, such as the legend of King Arthor as well as certain greek myths. I think it was that Eragon was fairly blatant in its rip off (I think it even has some of the same dialouge) and that IN ADDITION to this, it was fairly sophmoric in its writing. It got into the limelight pretty quickly for all of this, and people started shaking their heads. That's all. Lone Wolf was original enough (being written in 2nd person, for god's sakes) and also has quite a distinct storyline that's VERY different from star wars. think about it. The only things that are actually similar between the two are very foundational materials. As far as plot goes, LW is extremely different. As for Star Wars ripping off the epic hero thing, I believe that the reason it isn't criticized is because it also did something new with old material, setting it in space was a big deal for the time it was released. But Eragon takes several pretty unoriginal themes, such as dragons and the epic hero story line, and does an okay (not great) job of utilizing them. The real clincher, though, is that it was initially passed off by Paolini's family as a brilliant work of fiction, even more brilliant for being written by such a young author. The natural reaction to such an arrogant claim is to disown it, and in Eragon's case, it is not such a hard task. I don't think the criticism of Eragon is unfair, nor is the unfavourable comparison to Star Wars. What is unfair is that there are many terrible novels which don't recieve the same treatment. The DaVinci Code, for example. It was on the top lists for far too long for the shlock that it is. There's goddamn gramatical errors, for christ's sake, not to mention flimsy plot and HORRID dialouge. And Dan doesn't have the excuse of being a highschool student!

Amen to that black cat. The Da vinci code was pure drivel I held off as long as I could from reading that one as I was already acquainted with the Jesus maried to Mary Magdelene myth having read the Holy blood and the holy grail. And I find it hard to believe that someone supposedly as smart as Robert Langdon didn't know that Sofia was ancient greek for wisdom any idiot with a baby name book can figure that one out. plot holes you can drive a truck through just awful.
Eragon, when I first read it I said hmm... this is something I would have written if I was fourteen and had just finished reading lord of the rings and wouldn't you know it I flip to the back cover and guess what! I call it the readers digest version of LOTR, I work in a bookstore and when people ask me if it's any good I ask them if they read LOTR if they say I tried but it was too hard...I tell them well you're gonna love Eragon.
In George's defense he was not trying to reinvent the wheel. Star wars was his idea of the old flash gordon serials just like Indiana Jones was a retooling of the old Republic serials he used to watch as a child. Just remember there is no such thing as an original idea anymore. The movie Pretty Woman was based from a 3,800 year old greek play.
As for the bestseller's list well Elmore Leonard said after making that list for the first time after being a writer for 24 years. 'I had no idea i had written something boring enough to appeal to everyone"
end of rant
