And here in Spain Isabel I de Castilla, who ascended the throne upon 1479. ;D Did she not by and large create Spain by uniting two kingdoms under one rule? Actually the crowns of Castilla and Aragon were united under the reign of Charles I, I think that Isabel was only queen consort in the crown of Aragon. Isabel and Fernando of Aragon achieved the physical union of the country but the true political union as one kingdom was under Charles reign. (The names of Charles and Isabel are links that'll lead you to their wiki bios)

Actually I did once take a class in medieval history, it is debatable as to when the medieval times ended but it is considered to be sometime between 1300 and 1500. In England there was Queen Elizabeth the 1st although it was perhaps a bit after medieval times when she reigned but she is an example of a woman holding a high degree of power. There was also Eleanor of Aquatane, the mother of King Richard who had a good deal of power. As a matter of fact I learned that the reason why in the game of chess why the queen is such a strong chess piece was because there was a period in which women, in particular british queens, did obtain a good deal of power. I didn't say that there weren't women who had power, just extremely rare. And they weren't really acknowledged until later as being powerful. Rather, they had subtle control over things. And yes, Queen Elizabeth I was after the medieval period.
