Okay, I think we can all tell what this thread is about. It's about the archery contest in book 6 and which equipment should logicaly (or fairly) be applied to it.
Altan is a very accomplished archer. In fact, you're almost garaunteed to be competing at a -9 ratio unless you add bonuses.
Clearly the Sommerswerd isn't really very useful for shooting arrows at people with (and the bow's not likely to be any good for shooting much other than arrows). However, without it the match is almost a forgone conclusion and we are not told to exclude it (but surely common sense might have something to do with it).
Likewise a shield shouldn't really improve archery. If anything it'd hamper it. The silver helmet from book 3 should be used (it's a magic helmet afterall - if it wasn't then I'd say no bonuses).
What are other people's stands on what should and what should not be allowed to be used in this competition?
And yes, I see no reason to not use mindblast other than that it feels like cheating.

Chop Altan's leg, like someone wrote in his signature over at the PA boards! ;D

I agree on the helmet. If it magically enhances your skill, it should still apply in the tournament. And there's no reason Lone Wolf couldn't use Mindblast to disrupt Altan's concentration or whatever.
The Sommerswerd is more tricky. If you follow Legends-style logic, you could make a case for simple possession of the Sommerswerd enhancing Lone Wolf's abilities. But that argument falls down when you realise that would mean LW gets the +8 CS bonus whether he's using the Sommerswerd or a different weapon.
I generally don't bother with the tournament, because the odds are stacked against winning and the shiny new bow isn't the world's most useful item.

Maerin chuckles. Me and my own personal Lone Wolf with his somewhat fuzzier code of ethics things that one of those previous-books Gallowbrush potion aquisitions should be a fair factor in the archery contest.

Helmet would be valid, and as Sam said you could make a case for Mindblast being used. Using Alether berries as well would be valid, as you could take them at the start of the contest, and the rules dont say you cant take em. The 'swerd is out of the question though, anyone who adds that on as a bonus just doesnt deserve to win the Bow.

Altan has suffered a -2 CS decrease in the Mongoose transition and Lone Wolf still has trouble beating him?
The Silver Helm, Weaponmastery in Bow and Mindblast should win you the fight if you are really desperate for the Bow and have decent base score.
The Weaponmastery bonus was not listed previously, so it was rather undecided if it gave any bonus at all. Althogh adding three to all numbers picked is worth more than +3 CS bonus, if the player made that interpretation.
Lorecirecle of Fire can give another +1 for a total of +8.
To have good chances you need to fight him on -6/-5 ... so that means your total should be 22.
Mindblast is a desperate measure but probably useful if used to disrupt Altan's thoughts when he fires.... Can you Mindblast in a wrestling contest without being find out then surely you can do so in an archery contest.

The 'swerd is out of the question though, anyone who adds that on as a bonus just doesnt deserve to win the Bow. And yet in the original edition anyone who didn't had very little chance of getting the bow in the first place. You cannot be serious. So Lone Wolf wades into battle with a warhammer in each hand (weaponmastery) and with an additional big bnus for having a magic sword strapped to his back. Don't make me laugh. And humourously, as I post this, in the add box at the top of the boards it says :

Hahaha. Well, Legends has the Sommerswerd making Lone Wolf stronger and faster by its mere presence. I remember Viveka punching Lone Wolf's stomach and bruising her hand because he'd acquired the 'Swerd since their last meeting and it had strengthened him. There's also the thing with LW and the 'Swerd forming a gestalt entity that's more powerful than either of them individually. I'm not saying I agree with applying any of this to the archery tournament, I'm just saying it's possible to argue a case for it.

Hmmm.
So LW basically turns into Superman in Legends when getting the 'swerd huh? Havnt read em so I dont know the stories.
If the Sword of Omens couldnt do that for Lion-O, then the 'swerd shouldnt be doing that to LW either.

Actually it was more like a sliht enhancement on Lone Wolf's existing abilities - which has a canon basis, your sixth sense gets sharper for possessing the Sommerswerd

Yeah, he doesn't quite become Superman, just a bit better than before. And it still doesn't stop him being a complete berk and failing at everything he attempts. I quite enjoyed Legends, and I think John Grant has good ideas, but he ruins Lone Wolf as a character. But that's a different thread entirely...

It was nice to kick Altan's *ss once again in LW6. I didn't notice the reduction in Altan's CS in the new Mongoose version. For me, *Silver Helm Bonus - yes *Mindblast or Psi-Surge, yes. Even though "Endurance" is affected by Psi-Surge, we're shooting targets here, not shooting physically at each other. * Alether - yes, though I've never used it. * Armor bonuses, no. * SommerSwerd bonuses, no, although it could be argued for "augmentation" bonuses by merely having it. I guess I've always been lucky against Altan, or simply determined to win, but I've always kicked his *ss to the point that I've been tempted to borrow the Kalte bow or the Vassagonian Jakan just to rub it in. All is well, the tournament is rigged anyway. The Cener Druids have a beef with Altan and we wanted the stranger in green to win anyway. Altan must die. DIE !
