I didn't get to be Lone Wolf at the PA Renaissance Faire this weekend because instead I decided to take a 20 hour drive to Oklahoma. So, I drove to Oklahoma from NJ to play some Photon! By the way, for those of you who don't know, Photon is a laser type game where you wear helmets and chest plates and you use phaser guns to score off your opponents. I know lots of people on this board are from the UK. As far as I know, they never had Photon in the UK however, it was very big in the USA in the mid to late 80s. Photon was my life when I was a child and it was great to get to play it again.

We had Photon or similar in the UK yonks ago, like 1990 or so. I think we called it Laser Quest. A bowling alley (actually IIRC it was a lot bigger than that, with a swimming pool and stuff) near where I lived at the time was one place where you could play it. But I think it kinda died out. Can't think of anywhere here you could play it now.

I know there's still a Laser Quest in downtown Montreal.
These laser games have been replaced by something more violent: paintball. After all, it's the same concept, but it's more "real" with pain, a bigger open field and dirt. Of course, the price is way higher than Laser Quest...

There's still a Laser Zone in Swansea I think. And there was one in Cardiff a couple of years back - not sure if it's still there. I went to the Swansea one about 2 years back for a mate's birthday - it's still great fun.

Laser Quest was one chain; there were others. The big one in Nottingham was MegaZone, though we also had a Laser Quest and a Quasar. Quasar had the best setting. It was pretty industrial and had all manner of gantries and things, as opposed to the one-level layout of MegaZone.
It's a good ten years since I last went to one of those. I believe MegaZone was still there five years ago, but I don't think it is now.

I do remember playing Quazar in the UK when I visited years ago, but it was not the same thing as Photon. There have been lots of similar type laser games that have cropped up but Photon is the granddaddy of them all. Photon was invented by a man named George Carter who is from Texas. He got the idea of Photon back in 1977 when the first Star Wars movie was released, he was inspired by the laser shoot em up fights in the corridors. In Photon you wear a red or green helmet depending on what team you are on, and you shoot at the opposing team players. You score points by shooting them in the helmet or in the chest plate and you lose points by getting shot. You also get mega points by shooting the enemy base three times in a row. So that is Photon for you. At one time they had over 70 locations in the USA, now they have all but vanished. As far as I know, they never had any Photon locations outside of the country.

The equipment is better these days, so you can buy your own for about a hundred bucks (a full set for three players) and set up anywhere, even outdoors. There's a group in Eugene I used to "tag" with. But they were very weird individuals. In particular, two of them literally frightened (by their bizarre behavior) almost every new member away (eventually leaving it them and the founders).
