I can't play this, because my computer's too old, and a mac besides (but still very reliable). I've heard a lot of good things about it though. If anyone cares to try it out, could you drop me a review of it? It's toally free. shaiya.aeriagames.com/

Heh. That picture looks nice. I have a friend who's just started playing it, but I don't know what he thinks about it.

I was about to give it a go, but then realised I won't have net access from my computer over the summer (while I'm with my family and will have to use their computer) so there'd be no point.

So has anyone tried it? Looks like I should be able to steal my brother's wireless router for the summer, so maybe I'll give this a go after all

Heh, think I might give this a go now. A friend is really into a different free MMORPG called Conquer Online*, and I've started playing it. It's not bad, but a but light on the RPG side. Anyway, I now feel slightly less daunted by MMORPGs, so this one will be next I think. It's either this or shell out for Guild Wars...
*In the unlikely event that anyone her decides to try (or already plays) Conquer, drop me a line.

Hmm, so far Shaiya is actually quite enjoyable. I have no idea how good it is compared to other MMORPGs since I haven't played any (except briefly the aforementioned Conquer) but this is pretty much how I expected them to be. It's not gorgeous, but it's adequate; it runs smoothly on the server I'm using; and there are plenty of quests and locations to keep people busy. I haven't yet tried to team up with anyone, since that's a bit daunting.
I will say, though, that it took a while to download. And when I say a while, I mean a couple of hours (spread across about three different downloads). Still, that's the only real criticism. According to the Shaiya forums, the game changes for the better once you pass level 10. Also, the explanations of background, interface, etc are all crystal clear compared to the opacity of Conquer.
Anyone who wants the MMORPG experience without the cost should definitely give this a go. Whether it holds up against the likes of WoW, Rune Wars and Lineage I really don't know, but to someone new to the whole experience it works pretty well.
