Because it was missing...
***
Ghost Bear was born Kal Joren in MS5069 to a Border Rangers Captain and a farmer's daughter in the village of Ivywood, just outside Holmgard. He was brought up to be a humble young man, who shared a fascination of Lone Wolf and the Kai with his father, who was one of the Rangers sent with Lone Wolf to liberate Ruanon. He also had a keen interest in the natural world from a very young age, and it was this interest that would bring him to the attention of the local Knight, Sir Kandra Galonen.
Kal would often spend time in the forest near his home, and one day, Sir Galonen was leading a party of his fellow Knights of the Realm on a hunt in the forest. This forest was being regularly visited by poachers, rough men from the city who's only interest was in catching the prime game that called the forest their home. Kal knew of these poachers, and knew of the pit and snare traps they lay to catch their pray.
It was fortunate for Sir Galonen that he did, for he had unwittingly led his party onto a trail trapped in such a way. Just before the party stepped onto the camouflaged pit, a young boy stepped out of the bushes and warned them of the danger. Sir Galonen was amazed that the boy had been able to observe the poachers unseen, when his own men had failed, especially considering his tender age. He realised that the boy might well have latent Kai abilities, and this hunch proved to be true when Kal Joren was sent to the Monastery for evaluation, and inducted into the ways of the Kai at the age of 6.
He was named Ghost Bear by his tutors - Ghost for his ability to move through the forest like a supernatural spirit, and Bear because of his fierce desire to see Sommerlund protected from all harm - especially as he learned more and more about the Darklords in his first year of training.
He showed good promise with weapons and in the woodland skills of the Kai, and despite his young age, was one of the Kai defending the North Watch during the Lavas attack of MS5077. Since then, he rose steadily through the ranks of the Kai, being mostly sent on patrols in the Fryelund Forest due to his expertise in this area. He eventually rose to lead his own patrol when he reached the rank of Mentora.
However, Lone Wolf saw that the focus on the forest was limiting Ghost Bear’s growth in other areas, so, when the Dwarves of Bor contacted the Monastery to request aid against Shadaki Buccaneers, Ghost Bear was the Kai sent on this mission. He acquitted himself admirably, and not only succeeded in stopping the Buccaneers (killing their Captain in hand to hand combat aboard his ship), but also in earning the respect and lifelong friendship of the dwarves.
Between that time, and MS5091, Ghost Bear was sent on many missions, both in Sommerlund and far away in other lands, where he retrieved several rare artifacts and begun to earn a reputation in his own right. One of his last quests found him in the village of Hawk’s Nest, where he discovered Kai Lord Dusk Fox and brought him to the Monastery in MS5091.
Later that year, he returned to the Monastery a Kai Grand Master, and begun a period of meditation and study in the presence of the Lorestones of Nyxator. Other Grand Masters do not meditate for such a length of time, but it is thought that because of his apparent 'slow start', the length of time spent in the light of the Lorestones actually opened Ghost Bear's mind to the Grand Master skills, enabling him to master them at an accelerated rate.
He became one of the first Grand Masters, but on the day of his ascension to that rank, Lone Wolf vanished. It was speculated that he had traveled through the Shadow Gate of Toran to the Daziarn. He left the Sommerswerd, and the Grand Mastership of the Order of the Kai in the hands of Winterhawk, and it was Winterhawk who gifted the new Grand Master with his Kai Weapon, Magnara.
Since then, he has been responsible for the Kai Stables, as well as being entrusted with the defence of the Monastery when the Supreme Master has been absent. He continues to serve Sommerlund and the Kai diligently, striving, as Lone Wolf and Winterhawk did before him, to reach the pinnacle of Kai Mastership and achieve the rank of Supreme Master.
He has recently discovered a strange affinity with the Lorestone of Luomi. Due to the Darklands invasion, he has had no time to speculate on the deeper meaning of such a connection.
During the recent siege at the Kai Monastery, Ghost Bear led the tenacious defence against the Darklands forces, and broke the back of the siege by leading a ferocious cavalry charge out through the Monastery gates. Shortly after that, he achieved a first amongst the Kai, when he welcomed the Herbalish gourgaz S’vet’tee into the Monastery, after the later had volunteered to aid the Kai in healing their wounded from the battle.
He was also gifted with a new Kai Weapon, the Quarterstaff Akkadian at this time, and sent to Toran, to aid the people of that city against the advancing Darklands forces, and to discover what happened to Supreme Master Black Cat and his fleet.
He found Toran under siege, its mighty wall breached in several places by the forces of the Darklands. Along with Dusk Fox, he rode into the city, and to the Brotherhood of the Crystal Star, where Falling Phoenix was waiting at the threshold of the Shadow Gate. After a fierce battle, he discovered Falling Phoenix to be an imposter, who escaped through the Shadow Gate. Leaderless, the siege was lifted when Black Cat infiltrated the Drakkarim camp and killed the rest of the enemy generals.
Upon returning to the Monastery, and guided by the Lorestone of Luomi, he led a ritual to return the essences of the Lorestones to their shells, from where they had been residing in Dusk Fox's body. Soon after, he was named Kai Lieutenant, and accompanied the Brotherhood Mage Mydnight south to Athama, where a mysterious new enemy had emerged.
En route to the village, he saved the pegasus Arianwen from death, and earned the magical creature's trust and friendship. The Supreme Master and the Brotherhood Mage were successful in their quest to thwart this new enemy, and with Mydnight remaining in Athama to protect against any future attacks, Ghost Bear flew north to Toran, where he petitioned the Brotherhood of the Crystal Star for aid in defending the border villages along the Durncrag Mountains. Brother Darkash was chosen to lead this effort, and after promising sanctuary at the Monastery for any brother who required it, Ghost Bear returned home.
He is currently enjoying a period of relative calm at the Monastery, and has taken a hands on teaching role, both for current Grand Masters and for less advanced students, where his knowledge can be used to train the next generation of Kai Lords.
