Well since a brit started the hockey thread I thought it only fitting that a canadian start a soccer thread or football if you prefer.
Personally i prefer the euro tournament as I know more of the players, don't get much african soccer on tv up here in the great white north ditto the asian teams. And any sport is more fun to watch when you at least know some of the players. That being said of course they do show MLS games up here and I don't know any of the american players either, well maybe one or two.
The good news is being canadian and our team not having a prayer of ever qualifyin for the tournament I get to choose a team to cheer for (never brazil though) and this year I have chosen England, beckham is gone and supposedly all the prima dona attitudes, although I am not certain that their team captain sleeping with another players wife\girlfriend is a good sign either. Still England it is...

Being a Scot I haven't supported a Wolrd Cup team in quite a while And being a Scot in England, you can imagine I'm not reeeeally supporting England Work is doing a sweetstake thing with random teams assigned, which is fun, So I have Holland and Germany. Come on Holland and or Germany

Not being a football fan - not 'cause it isn't a good game, but because of all the ludicrous amount of nonsense that comes with it over here - I tend to be somewhat unpatriotic. I'm English and I'm in England, but my little bit of German-ancestry-that-I-know-next-to-nothing-about is more than enough excuse to back Germany, even if just to rile those who take it more seriously than I do. Mind you, if we do a wear-something-World-Cup-related-to-work day at during the tournament, I'm not sure I'll be brave enough to walk round emblazoning the German flag! Also, I met some terrific Koreans a few years back, so I have a soft spot for Korea and would like to see South Korea do well. Right now, they could probably do with something to cheer about. So first choice: South Korea. Second: Germany. As for England, when was the last time they were interesting to watch and stood some chance? I don't know the answer to that, but I suspect Gary Lineker may still have been playing at the time.

The Czech Republic hasn't qualified for the World Cup this year. But because I'm kind of "lusophil", I support Portugal and Brasil.

Wow it turns out my next door neighbor is Slovenian...Who knew? He has invited me over to his place for a few cold ones when Slovenia plays and since I only drink two kinds of beer...free beer and cold beer, I guess it's a date. Go Slovenia...

Cool. I'd typically support their neighbours Croatia, but since the Croats failed to make it to the finals, I definitely support the supporting of the Slovenes. And the Serbs. Yeah, I think I'll add Serbia to my list.

I recently read in a soccer magazine that they might not have enough hotels built in time for the world cup. It seems that the south africans based the amount they would need on the number of tickets people could possibly buy. I guess no one told them about how some countries (namely the germans) like to visit a game sight sans ticket and just party on the streets. I hope these fans realize that it is winter right now down there (fyi a plus to the english team who traditionally wilt in the heat) although after looking at the average temperatures down there it is more like spring weather, really.

I shall let you know on Wednesday which team I'll be supporting. That's when our sweepstake teams are drawn in work. Knowing my luck I'll get England...

We already have the wall chart up at work. Amazing how much a sweepstake can make you care about an event, isn't it?

I wouldn't have thought the Venn diagram for 'fantasy gamebook reader' and 'football fan' overlapped so much.
I'm not normally keen on football, and yet I've lived outside of my home country for 7 of the last 8 years. So the World Cup does stir a patriotic little something inside me. Quietly rooting for England. Until they get knocked out, when I'll switch allegiance to my adopted home country (and ancestral enemy, I suppose) France.
Damn, I should really start learning some players' names, and... um... the rules.
