Wow! Czech Republic - Slovakia 3:1! ;D So, this should give me 7 points for the Czech Republic (5 for win + 2 for 3 goals) and 1 point for Slovakia (1 goal). Am I right? So, I should have 8 points now.

I couldn't resist and right now I'm watching the Czecho-slovak derby from the record (at work, erm). It is a wonderful match, absolutely fantastic - very fast, "up and down", technical, full of smart combinations and individual actions on both sides, with a very good atmosphere (fans of both teams are friendly mixed together - this won't happen in the matches with Russia). If anyone wants to see a high-class hockey, watch this! And just a small note: In Europe we're used to count the time from 0:00 to 20:00, whereas in North America it's from 20:00 to 0:00. This will never stop confusing me!

A hockey match just started on the BBC red button - it's just USA v Norway, but at least I'll get to watch one of these things.
A question for the experienced hockey-watchers: How DO you keep track of where the puck is?

Sweden - Germany 2-0
So for me (Sweden): 5 (win) + 3 (shut-out) + 1 (2 goals) = 9 points For eviltb (Germany): 0 points

Wow! Slovakia beated Russia! Fantastic! OK, it was after the draw 1:1, then the shoot-outs followed and these were won by Slovakia, so the result is 2:1 (SO)! I couldn't watch this, but I was listening to the shoot-outs on the radio - these were nerves! Oh my, these were nerves! But Slovakia won - this makes me twice very happy. Firstly because I get more points than Doomy , but secondly and more importantly, the Slovaks defeated the Russian machine, the dwarf defeated the monster! ;D It makes the B group very complicated and also very interesting. This is why I love hockey! But! How will we count it? How many points do we get? I didn't realise there were overtimes and shoot-outs in the starting groups, so I'm not sure if I get 5 points for a win and Doomy gets 2 points for a draw? I don't know. What do you think? What about this: the team losing the overtime/shoot-out gets 2 points (for the draw) and the team winning it gets 4 points (so less then winning it in the standard time)? EDIT: I've just realised: in the tournament, the teams get either 1 point (draw, losing overtime), or 2 points (draw, winning overtime), or 3 points (winning). So - wouldn't it be logical if we had 2 points (draw, losing overtime), 4 points (draw, winning overtime), 6 points (winning)? Of course, this would mean re-calculating the previous results (but we're still at the beginning, so it wouldn't mean that much work), but this system would seem more logical and fair to me? What do you think? Simey: Please, could you put the "table" with goals - points in your first post, to have all the rules in one post? And we have to solve this overtime/shoot-out issue somehow and put it there too.

Bah! Damn those plucky Slovakians!
I don't know how shoot-outs work in ice hockey. If this were football I'd suggest just counting each penalty scored as a goal.
ETB, AS: USA beat Norway 6-1. For a while the Norwegians put up a decent fight but they collapsed at the end and conceded three goals.

If this were football I'd suggest just counting each penalty scored as a goal. Nope, you can't do this in my opinion - you would be in a great danger that you would have too many goals / points (even tens). I would suggest counting only the last / winning goal (as in the tournament statistics). The more I think about it the more I like my idea (erm ) of getting 2 - 4 - 6 points for draw lost - draw won - victory.

I didn't realise there were overtimes and shoot-outs in the starting groups Me neither - I was thinking about how to deal with those things later on and then they were happening already. Oops. I don't want to put the points for winning higher than 5 - in the tournament itself, whilst goal difference can be taken into account if necessary, the teams don't actually score points for number of goals and shut-outs as we're doing here, so we're already dishing out a lot more points as it is. I agree that winning a shoot-out should count as scoring a single goal for us, just as it does in the tournament. I reckon that if it's a draw after regulation time, the team that goes on to win still gets 5 points, whilst the team that goes on to lose gets 3. If the draw is 0-0 after regulation time, the team that goes on to lose should get 1 point for the regulation time shut-out - worth acknowledging, I think. The team that goes on to win will obviously get the usual 3 points for an overall shut-out. I'll alter all this in the first post as suggested, but if anyone thinks it's not right, just shout.

A question for the experienced hockey-watchers: How DO you keep track of where the puck is? 1) Get a big TV. 2) Hope for decent reception. 3) Concentrate very hard. 4) Do not try and eat while watching. 5) Do not try and do ironing. 6) Do drink coffee, but only during breaks in play. 7) Do not look away from the screen until a whistle is blown. 8) When the puck is out of sight, imagine where you think it should be going and look there - often you will be right. 9) Be thankful for slow-motion replays of crucial moments. 10) Be thankful you're not one of the players whose career depends on keeping track of the dratted thing. IT'S EASY! ;D P.S. 11) If you attend a hockey match with no giant replay screen, recognise that some goals you will only know about because the light goes on. (Despite this, I cannot emphasise enough how worthwhile it is going to a hockey match at least once. )

As stated above, the Czech Republic's 3-1 result got Jan 7 points, whilst Slovakia in opposition grabbed 1 point. We shall return to Jan later.
AS's home team Sweden wins 2-0 and nets him an excellent 9 points. ETB's Germany get him nothing from that, but the USA's 6-1 victory over Norway gains him 8 points, whilst leaving another 1 point for AS.
My leap-of-faith first choice Finland have come good in their first match, winning 5-1 over Belarus, and getting me 7 points, with Belarus grabbing 1 point for BC by their single goal.
Having looked almost as ludicrously dominant as their women's team, the Canadian men had a bit of a scare coming up against Switzerland, eeking out a 3-2 win only after a shoot-out. 7 points for BC and a terrific - considering the opposition - 4 points (3 for being tied after regulation time, 1 for the two goals) for Doomy.
Doomy's star team, however, fared not so well, suffering a shock defeat to Slovakia: 2-1 after a shoot-out. Still, Doomy scores another 4 points, whilst Jan, whose very neighbourly - we're talking historically, geographically and, er, group-ly - team-up is looking like paying off rather well, scores 6 points.
Okay, so some Current Standings for y'all:
Black Cat: 19 points Doomy: 17 points EvilTB: 15 points Jan: 14 points Aguila Saber: 10 points Simey: 8 points
I think that's right. If anyone spots any mistakes, just yell - especially if it's something that means I'm not losing! ;D

Well done, Sir! Very well done indeed! ;D 14 points after 3 matches - almost 5 points in average! Man, I was born under a lucky star! suffering a shock defeat to Slovakia It was not so shocking. I told you they were very good, with an old, but strong team. Traditionally, Slovaks had strong offensive but bad goalkeepers, but Halak seems to be very good. I'm now watching the 3rd period of Russia - Slovakia match and the Slovaks are really good. I watched the shoot-outs before and Halak was really great. Wait... Slovaks defeated Russians and the Czech Republic defeated Slovaks... what can it mean? Czech Republic - Latvia today. I should win this. Did I tell you that one of the players in the Czech team (Tomas Rolinek) was born in the same town and is in the same year as me - he was my class-mate in the basic school! I feel so important! ;D

Czech Republic - Latvia today. I should win this. Drat. Yes, you probably will. Wow! So your support of the Czech team is not only patriotic, but personal too. Very cool. Was this up to about age 10-11? Were you all playing hockey by then?

Here's his (presumably) writeup on Wikipedia, it's a bit out of date since there is no mention of the current Olympics. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom%C3%A1%C5%A1_RolinekDoes anyone have games in hand? Both of my teams have played twice I think.

Both of my teams have played twice I think. Me, thankfully! Two of them! Both Latvia and Finland have played only once. The Czech Republic, Belarus, Sweden and Germany have played only their first match also, so that means that Jan, BC, AS and ETB all have one game in hand.

In that case, I'm not doing that well at all and could easily end up in fourth place before long!
