Wow! Nicely done, Simey! Beautiful comments! As Doomy said, it's really bad that the matches will be played in such insane times - I have to get up early, so won't be able to watch it. However, many pubs in the Czech Republic decided to stay open for the whole nights, offering large screens for the guests and cheap beer, so it's going to be an interesting month! ;D Anyway, we already have two medals! One gold (skating - the girl is from my hometown) and one bronz (cross-country skiing).

I just wish the Games were in a more sensible time zone, can't really stay up to watch much though I've enjoyed the fleeting glimpses I have managed. Any British medal prospects? The BBC seem to be doing a fine job of running highlights pretty much all the time, so it appears - if you have Red Button access, there's seems to be little reason to miss out, plus on BBC 2 in the evenings they seem to be mixing up live coverage with highlights of the previous night. Personally, I've set myself up with a load of late shifts so I can be watching hockey in the middle of the night every night! ;D I think there's a British woman in with some chance in the snowboarding (has anyone seen the snowboard-cross? UNBELIEVABLE!), and the GB men's curling team (actually all Scottish) sound like a decent prospect. I have a feeling there was someone else, but I can't remember who or in what right now. many pubs in the Czech Republic decided to stay open for the whole nights, offering large screens for the guests and cheap beer, so it's going to be an interesting month! ;D Wow - here's wishing I could come and stay in Prague for a couple of weeks. That's sounds great! Righty, I need to eat, get to bed, get up at three for Canada Vs. Norway, go back to bed, get up to go to work for twelve. I'm gonna be a wreck by Sunday, but I reckon it's gonna be worth it!

You're fortunate to be on flexible shifts, I'm strictly 9-5.
Either the Beeb is showing 20 minutes of ice hockey before cutting to figure skating or they're splitting the coverage somehow (red button?).
Hazel Irvine completely failed to elucidate on this point.

You're fortunate to be on flexible shifts, I'm strictly 9-5. Well, most of the time I'd say 9-5 is better! I'm either 12-8 or 6.30-3.30 - one leaves you without sleep, both without a life. Yes - grrr. It would appear that the BBC don't start showing much hockey until the weekend - there was a grand total of about ten minutes shown at ten past three, and then back to figure skating. I am so very pleased to have dragged myself back out of bed after 90 minutes sleep for that. I don't think. British Eurosport are showing whole matches already, in case you have access to that. I don't. Still, I think - very much hope! - that there'll be more hockey on the BBC from Friday or Saturday onwards. It is, after all, from the Canadians' point of view, the biggest event going, by the sounds of it - I heard a quote that they'd rather the men's hockey team wins gold than that Canada tops the medals table.

Well, it's been a good day for those who put their trust in the North Americans.
The USA got a solid 3-1 win over Switzerland.
Norway held Canada off for the first period - something of an achievement in itself - but then the flood gates opened and the home nation became unstoppable. Even a Norwegian powerplay that looked like it might see them snatch a goal and deny the shut-out was turned on its head as Canada scored short-handed (or close to it). The final score? An intimidating 8-0. Yikes.
ETB gets 7 points from the USA's victory, 5 for the win and 2 for scoring three goals. The sort of points I'd expect a winning team to get on average.
Doomy grabs 1 point from the same match thanks to Switzerland's goal.
Black Cat gets off to an unbelievable start with his countrymen netting him an alarming11 points - 5 for the win, 3 for the goals and another 3 for the shut-out.
Surely it doesn't get any better than that? Well, as I write this, Russia are 3-0 up over Latvia after only the first period, so Doomy may yet be an even bigger winner for the day. We shall see.
Come on Latvia!

I got word from my friend about the Hockey win. As one of the coaches, she's very excited. I guess they beat the Chinese, too!

Final score for Russia v Latvia: 8 - 2
This is already looking like a two-horse race.

Really, you want the Czech Republic to win with a 9-8 scoreline.

Hum, I probably missed it, but can someone tell me what was decided for the second round with 4 teams getting a bye?

I think that we decided that we would decide it later, or something. ;D
The original idea was to give 8 points to all the teams that make it directly to the play-offs, but I'm still a bit unsure about it (although not against). I think we should discuss it a bit more.

Final score for Russia v Latvia: 8 - 2 This is already looking like a two-horse race. Are you calling yourself a horse? ;D I hope that our having two teams each will dilute the influence of the hockey juggernauts that are Canada and Russia. But after yesterday I'm not so sure. Then again, whilst I can't see them piling on the goals in quite the same way, Sweden, Finland the Czech Republic should prove pretty useful. Remember, a shut-out is as good as or better than up to nine goals, so a 1-0 scoreline will actually get the winning team more points (9) than a result of 9-1 (8). I'm hoping we've rigged the system in favour of balance! Though it doesn't help when the Canadians score a zillion goals and fail to concede any! Unsporting or what!? ;D

Time will tell. Of course I also have a reasonably good second team... I think.
I know nothing!

So Russia let a couple of goals in whilst netting eight themselves. That gives Doomy 8 points (5 for the win, 3 for the goals) and allows me 1 point for Latvia not giving up and scoring twice, good on 'em. Current StandingsI realise that Jan's not had a team play yet, whilst Doomy's had both his teams involved already, but I might not get back on 'til tomorrow evening, so I thought I'd update the overall positions so far. Black Cat: 11 points Doomy: 9 points EvilTB: 7 points Simey: 1 point Jan: 0 points Aguila Saber: 0 pointsI think the rest of us have to hope that Belarus are so awful that they manage to counteract the Canadian element of BC's challenge!
