Fantasy Olympic Ice Hockey
Anyone fancy some hockey? Well, okay, backing a team or two in the Winter Olympic tournament (start date: 16th February) and seeing who made the best choices and wins?
Even if you're not a mad fan, it's a terrific sport and surely one of the most exciting at the Olympic Games - supporting a team only makes it that much more exciting! ;D
These are the twelve competing teams, initially grouped as follows (and their 2009 world ranking):
Group A: Canada (2), USA (5), Switzerland (7), Norway (11)
Group B: Russia (1), Czech Republic (6), Slovakia (9), Latvia (10)
Group C: Sweden (3), Finland (4), Belarus (8), Germany (12)
Proposed Fantasy Olympic Ice Hockey rules:
One of your chosen teams wins a match: score 5 points.
Your team achieves a shut-out (concedes no goals in a match): score 3 points.
Your team is involved in a draw after regulation time, but goes on to lose the match: score 3 points.
Your team achieves a shut-out in a regulation time draw (0-0), but goes on to lose the match: 1 point
Your team scores one or more goals: 1 point for the first goal scored; 1 point for the next two goals scored; 1 point for the next three goals scored; and so on. So:
1 goal scored in a match = 1 point
2 goals scored in a match = 1 point
3 goals scored in a match = 2 points
4 goals scored in a match = 2 points
5 goals scored in a match = 2 points
6 goals scored in a match = 3 points
7 goals scored in a match = 3 points
8 goals scored in a match = 3 points
9 goals scored in a match = 3 points
10 goals scored in a match = 4 points
Your team wins the bronze medal: score 1 extra point.
Your team wins the silver medal: score 3 extra points.
Your team wins the gold medal: score 5 extra points.
Example:
In a non-medal match Norway beat Canada 7-3: Norway gets 8 points (5 for the win plus 3 for 7 goals scored); Canada gets 2 point for three goals scored.
In a non-medal match Germany and Belarus are tied at 4-4 at the end of regulation time. Germany goes on to win in a shoot-out, so the score overall is considered to be 5-4. Germany gets 7 points (5 points for the victory, 2 points for scoring five goals). Belarus gets 5 points (3 points for the tie after regulation time, 2 points for four goals scored).
In the bronze medal match Slovakia beat Russia 2-0: Slovakia get 10 points (5 for the win, 1 for scoring two goals, 3 for the shut-out and 1 for winning the bronze medal); Russia get 0 points.
How we will choose our teams:
1. Players will be put in alphabetical order and numbered in that order. 2. A number-of-players-taking-part sided dice will be rolled on-line. 3. The player whose number comes up chooses a team first and then the rest of the players choose one team following numerical order upwards then back to 1. 4. Once the first round of team choices is over - all the players have chosen one team - the last player to choose in round 1 picks first in the second round and everyone picks a second team in reverse order.
Okay, even I'm confused, so, for example:
The players are: Boris, Carl, Arnold and Dennis. They are numbered in alphabetical order: 1 Arnold, 2 Boris, 3 Carl, 4 Dennis. A four sided dice is rolled with the result 3. Carl chooses one team first, Dennis chooses next, then Arnold, then Boris. Then Boris chooses a second team, then Arnold, then Dennis then Carl.
So why not get yourself a little incentive to support some of the teams, even if - like me - you come from a country whose team didn't make it to the Olympics!
Currently taking part: Black Cat, Doomy, Jan, Simey, EvilTB, Aguila Saber
EDIT: There may be some slight rule adjustments as the likes of me realises the competition runs in a slightly more complicated way than I first thought. But don't worry about that - just join in! ;D
