The only problem is that two-handed weapons become all-but useless, since you give up the +2CS from a Shield.

The only problem is that two-handed weapons become all-but useless, since you give up the +2CS from a Shield. Indeed. I'd only use a two-handed weapon if I got stuck with it on Weaponskill, and even then the Weaponskill bonus is only +2CS anyway, so it doesn't make much difference either way. Once you hit Magnakai and are able to actually choose your Weaponmastery weapons, two-handed ones are completely redundant. Having said that, I have a soft spot for the quarterstaff because I remember walking unarmed into an atrium or something during my very first LW experience (Shadow on the Sand), finding a staff against the wall, and being greatly relieved. It was the first time I'd had an experience like that in a gamebook - scurrying around a labyrinthine palace, thinking "Crap crap crap! Need a weapon! Heeeeelp!"

Funnily enough, I think that's why I like the Quarterstaff so much too. Not so much because I needed a weapon though. I seem to remember the description of the atrium being one of the best passages in the whole book, so the QS against the wall was quite memorable for that reason. That's why both incarnations of Ghost Bear (both on TotS and the ERPG) use a Quarterstaff. -GB

Haha, weird coincidence. If the atrium is well written (I'd have to go and check), maybe that's another reason it sticks in my mind.
