Doomy finds one interesting bush with Berries which looks promising. He has seen similar in Bor and they may be of use to him, or perhaps not.
You will need to use the Book of Herbs to indentify the bush and the Berries, since you do not recall their effects from memory.
Elsewhere everything looks quiet. There are no signs of activity nearby.

Get book from backpack and use it to identify berries. I don't know how many Activity that will use up, so if I have any left, I will use it to take any berries that prove useful (healing/restorative). Not interested in poisons. I would also like to expend my Perception points doing a ranged search on D4.
"Humph. I'm a soldier, no' a bloody gardener," grumbles Doomy to himself as he opens his backpack and fetches his book of herblore and begins flicking through its section on berries, comparing the bush to its illustrations. Despite his grumbling, the veteran gunner has lived long enough to know that making use of all possible advantages keeps one alive.

Only ranged searches vertically and horisontally, I'm afraid. So along C-4 or along D-3 is OK, but not D-4.
This is to limit the character advantage. The enemies does not perform ranged searches.

OK, in that case I will perform a ranged search on C4.

According to the book the berries are the southern magnamund version of Alether Berries. They have the same effect as their well-known cousins to the north.
Berries: Alether. +1 attack and +1 AC. 5 Rounds.
Your Backpack is full and you will need to remove somthing to make place for it. You are also free to come back here later and pick them up, same goes for any item you leave behind here.
When you look to the south you see some creatures moving about at range. They are still fairly distant. (C-8).
Between you and the annihilators there are some more bushes and vegetation.

The dwarf grunts with satisfaction at finding Alether, but grimaces when he sees the distant foes. How many will he have to kill today?
Drop (or eat) ration from pack, put Alether in its place, along with the book. Ready Pistol and spend all remaining Activity moving south using the vegetation as cover. My two Perception will be used on a ranged search of the square immediately south of wherever the move ends.

Is there nowhere obvious where I can avoid these enemies? If not, I'll just have to kill them.

You can surely avoid them by going in another direction. They have not seen you yet.
The other direction could be worse.
It is not uncommon with several close by enemy groups on the map. Especially on your and Beowuufs.

Ah, but they are between me and my objective, no? My basic gameplan is to make a beeline for the beacon, killing anything unfortunate enough to get in the way.
So... Spend 7 Activity moving south, plus 2 on a ranged search of the enemy location. Next round will be all about the murdering.

Spend 7 Activity moving south, plus 2 on a ranged search of the enemy location. Next round will be all about the murdering. More ranged searches on the already spotted enemy will not give anything in this instance. Putting a points into general search on a location you pass might. You might also try to lure the enemy to you. Shout some insults and they may move towards you. Armoured by your plate you will not be able to surprise attack them anyway. Luring the enemy towards you have the benefit of reducing the risk of having to fight several groups at once.

The dwarf moves towards the group of Annihilators, yelling obscenities in an ancient Borese dialect. He hopes to lure them into pistol range where they can easily be gunned down.
OK, Ready pistol, spend 7 Activity moving towards the enemy and 2 Perception searching the square where movement ends.

Then they stop and starts making movements with their arms. They are still a bit away from you and they are not inclined to move closer! Annihilator 1 and 2 are at C-7 SW Annihilator 3 and 4 are at C-7 SE They are spread out on a line before you. With the pistol you can hope to hit no more than two of them. So question on how you want to spend the remainder of the round. Doomy, and then the two targeted Annihilators (1d10=10, 1d10=4, 1d10=5) Doomy goes first. Doomy Bor Pistol shot (1d10=8, 2d6=7, 2d6=4) Hits with damage: 9. Doomy kills the Annihilator. Doomy Bor Pistol shot vs Annihilator 2. (1d10=8, 2d6=7, 2d6=9) Hits with damage; 14.
