Nope. You can only recruit people who are not presently on Battlestations! It's that game's mechanism for getting you to "invite" people to the game without ramming the need down your throat like a lot of FaceBook apps do. Well, bugger that. I refuse to become a spammer. I read on the wiki that robot crew will eventually be available for purchase anyway. Congrats on Level 50, by the way!

There was an update today on the BS forums by a developer. Prosposing you will be able to buy (with in-game gold) other captains as crew members. As far as I can see this is not included in the game yet. Oh, and congrats on level 50. Probably means new and more powerful NPC's. I saw on the forums that the most powerful NPCs got an armor boost making them more difficult to take down.

Probably means new and more powerful NPC's. Probably. If you hear a girly scream and see a massively-armored ship running away, yipping in terror, it's probably just me.

Does it mean I could, say, pay in-game gold to sign up the players on my Friends List, and they could sign me up in return? I could live with that. But I won't go and pester people to join the game.

Not much luck for me as of late. No good finds alas. You all got 100 EP as a compensation for the lagging on Sunday, make sure you spend it before you get 360 which is the maximum you can accumulate. We can now buy services of the other captains. Manage Crew -> Friends List then press Hire. Since the hired captain gets nothing and hiring a captain which already is hired by someone else increases the price (with no benefit to the one who is hired) I suggest we take dibs here on who we want to hire, and avoid hiring captains from each other. (You can only hire captains who are on your friends list.)

So until they bring out bots for crew, hiring others is lame.
Ive reached the point now where I have too much gold and not enough resources. Wasnt there a mining sub-game you could do, spending AP on getting resources?

There is a Mining option in the Sailing menu (Explore, Attack etcetera) if you are not in Aeros or the Imperial City.
You put in X Gold and Y AP and get out Z Resources.
FAQ says that an Enginner has less risk of having unfortunate events happen to them while Mining.
I haven't tried this myself though.

Wasnt there a mining sub-game you could do, spending AP on getting resources? Yes. You can only do it at certain ports though. And every time I've tried it, I've got very few resources for my AP outlay. It's not cost efficient.

Noticed on the forums that there will be a special worker's day event on the first of May.
All you have to do is login, find the gift button and click it. You will be gifted Ore, Gold, or an event rare for your level.
Edit:
Oh. and finally some change in luck a new rare find and exactly the item I needed to. A Giga Drill Breaker!
(Hurriedly equips the new Ram)

Finally! Level 45. And since I got the Giga Drill breaker I decided to swap my Merchant O'War to a Cargo Dirigible. (Would have paid a Plasma Rock and gotten a third weapon on my Merchant O'War otherwise.)
Will keep me out of capacity problems and I can Ram out most NPCs in my first try at the moment.
Got 30+ something Ore as my Labour Day gift.

Maerin sighs I got gold. Not quite the most useless gift I might have gotten, I suppose, but in the operating range...
That said, it is tempting to invest some gold in the Resource Market today. The price of both wood and ore may temporarily plummet with the free gift offer.
