By the way, two of the guys from our winning team (Rolinek and Koukal) are from my hometown. I feel sooo important.

That's a real shame. I really though they might have missed their once-in-every-decade record by only one year. But Chicago is my second/third-ish favourite NHL team, so I'll definitely be pleased if they win the cup. And prior to that possibility, a reality: Congratulations to the Czech Republic!

Now Chicago is going to beat Philly and win the cup for the first time since the 60s. Yep, I was right: Chicago won the Cup. Kuddos to them! Ouch, but I only guessed correctly the winner of each round 8 times on 15 series. Not good...

Did you notice, guys? "The Great One" was born 50 years ago today. Happy Birthday, Wayne!

Yep, I just read an article about that in today's newspaper. The Great One is 50 years old, but he reached that age in only in 39 years! ;D

The what? Oh, that little tournament that almost nobody cares here in North America. That's sad though that it gets little attention over here. Of course, the fact that the Stanley Cup Playoffs are still going at that time explains why it is not that popular. Plus the fact that this tournament has been held only ONCE in North America in the past (Quebec City and Halifax in 2008), I'm pretty sure some casual hockey fans don't even know this championship exists.

Who is that man? If he's a famous professional athlete, why can't he afford a decent dentist?

Doomy: these were his 4th or 5th teeth, I guess, so he wasn't much worried. And, yes, he's a hockey player. @black Cat: yes, I know that the North Americans are not very interested in the World Championships and I understand it, but I think it's kind of sad and pitty. The result is that the US and Canadian teams are weak and many Europeans are also still playing the NHL and so on. I've never understood why it's not possible to place the Championship after the NHL finals - it's not the fault of the Americans and Canadians, of course - it's perhaps kind of everbody's fault. I don't understand the World Hockey Politics. All I know is that i't sad and pitty.

Well, you have to understand that:
1- The NHL playoffs will end at the beginning of June. Holding the world championship for a winter sport in the middle of summer makes no sense.
2- After a long season, several NHL players just want to relax. Some of them played the full 82 games on the schedule, plus 3-4 pre-season games. That's nearly 90 games. That's why several players refuse to go the world championship when their team is not in the playoffs.
3- They can't hold the World Championship in the middle of the NHL season or before it begins. The NHL takes a 2-weeks break during the Olympics, but that happens only once in four years while the World Championship comes back every year. If you put the championship before the NHL season, several players would not go because they don't want to get injured. Don't forget that they pro players are paid only if they play in the NHL, not when playing for the national team. Sadly, most players prefer money over their country.
Of course, when there is a World Cup, most NHL players are going because even if this tournament is held before the NHL season, it is organized BY the NHL. I don't know when this event will come back though, but I hope it will do.

Would it not make some sense to hold the World Championships every year EXCEPT an Olympic year, and have it for ten days or something in January or February with the NHL taking a break like it does for the Olympics?
