Coventry Blaze have won the Elite League title! Yay!
Went to the final regular season match on Sunday. Had Coventry not clinched the title the night before, it would have been the most intense match of the season - it was between the first and second (Belfast) placed teams. As it was, the match meant nothing, so players who don't get much ice time were tried out - notably the back-up goalies, hence a 6-4 scoreline - and only the third period had any real excitement. Belfast won the match.
But the highlight was to see the Blaze celebrating - and joining in said celebration - and receiving the awards and the cup. Terrific atmosphere in a packed Skydome. I just wish I'd made it to more than three matches this season, 'cause I've been a bit out of touch with goings on. But good stuff nonetheless.
Now, can Coventry do what they've only done once before and take the Play-Off title as well? In the Elite League over here, the league win is by far the biggest title. But winning the Play-Off tournament would be a great way to round off the season.

Is anyone here watching the Hockey World Championship in Germany? The whole thing is upside down (a selection follows): Canada - Switzerland 1:4 Czech Republic - Norway 2:3 USA - Germany 1:2 Finland - Denmark 1:4 USA - Denmark 1:2 Slovakia - Denmark 0:6 (!) Switzerland - Czech Republic 3:2 (Denmark and Switzerland are really playing very well) Of course, many players are missing because of the NHL play-offs, but the whole thing still makes me .

Wish hockey was ig enough in this country that somebody would be broadcasting that - some dramatic results there. Some national coaches must hope desperately that their star player's NHL team doesn't make the Play-offs! What stage is this? Is the final stage played during the NHL season as well? Or is this it?

It's currently the eighth-final groups, or how would you say it in English - two groups, 6 teams in each. Both Czech Republic and Slovakia are performing badly. All the games are broadcasted life on Czech TV! ;D

All the games played by Canada are also broadcasted live, but since the tournament takes place in Europe, most of the games are happening during the day when people in NA are working, so we don't really watch the games. Plus, it is currently the NHL playoffs, so most people are focusing on that. The Habs are now in the semifinal against Philadelphia! It's the first time in 17 years that they get this far and the last time, they won the Cup. Not bad for a team that ended the season in 19th place overall!

Yeah, if they get to the final I'm going to HAVE to find some way of seeing it!

Your prediction for the first match shows a certain lack of patriotism.

OK, so the semifinals (Saturday) are:
Sweden - Czech Republic
Russia - Germany
Russia is definitely going to win that match. But Sweden - Czech. Rep is very open - our team can't stop surprising me - we lost with some very weak oponents and now we defeated Finland (and Sweden before).

We're in the final! We defeated Sweden! I just can't believe it! Sweden was leading 2:1, and we were playing power-play for 2 minutes, and then, only 7 seconds before the end, we equalised to 2:2. And then we won on penalty shootouts 2:1! Oh yes! The last about 20 minutes of the game were fantastic, our team proved an immense will and effort and "heart", they were fighting like lions, and they really deserve the victory! Our team has really recovered, if you take into account the poor beginning of the tournament (we lost with Norway 2:3, for instance).
