The Czech Republic, Slovakia and Russia are all in the same group? Yoiks! Which poor saps are in there with them? Stay out of that group's way! Latvia. They've improved very much in last years, their play-style is kind of sympathetic and brave, but I'm afraid that it won't be enough for them in this "group of death". What say a few of us have a very simple fantasy Winter Olympics hockey tournament? (I think I vaguely recall something like this perhaps happening related to the World Cup or something on old TotS.) Sounds very good. But - what does it mean? Could you explain it, please? How would it work?

Yeah, hum, could you explain this to us? How would it worked?

Well, at it's simplest, we could divide all the teams in the tournament amongst all of us who are taking part - all picking one then all picking a second and so on, so no one ends up with all the weakest teams - and then:
VERY SIMPLE: If one of your teams wins a match, you get 2 points. (Perhaps if you win bronze you get an extra 2 points, silver an extra 3 and gold an extra 5.) If you draw a match (if that's possible), you get 1 point.
A BIT MORE IN-DEPTH: A win gets you 5 points. A shut-out gets you an extra 3. Every full three goals you score in a single match gets you an extra point. A draw gets each team 2 points.
So Norway beat Canada 7-3 ( ;D it could happen!): Norway gets 7 points (5 for the win plus 2 for 2x3 full goals scored); Canada gets 1 point for three goals scored.
Slovakia beat Russia 2-0: Slovakia get 8 points (5 for the win and 3 for the shut-out); Russia get 0 points.
SUPER-COMPLICATED: We could assign points for all goals and negative points for penalties and all that sort of thing, but I think that would be too difficult to keep track of.
What do you think?

Wow! It looks pretty simple - it actually looks so simple, that even I should understand it without any significant problems. ;D So - count me in! I'd choose the "intermediate" level ("a bit more in-depth" as you called it). I just have to learn the English hockey terminology - boy, it took me some time to learn that a "shut-out" is a "clean sheet". Perhaps, we should start a new thread for it, to make it clearer and maybe also to attract more people (as it seems that only a few are visiting this relatively specialised thread, but this game could attract more attention).

Good plan! BC, are you in? If the three of us are definitely playing then we might hopefully attract a few more. EDIT: My points scoring system above was just an example. Does a shut-out deserve as much as 3 extra points? Is 1 extra point per three goals scored enough? What do you think?

This competition would be a lot easier if the USSR still existed. I'd go them.

There are 12 teams in the tournament, so ideally, we need 3, 4 or 6 players.
About the pointing system - honestly, I don't know. In my opinion, the shut-out deserves either 2 or 3 points, so 3 seems OK to me; and 1 point for 3 goals is enough, I think. I never know how to decide these things.
I've been thinking about the rules, and I suggest using the system from the Settlers of Catan for picking teams at the beginning. So, for example, if you have three players (A, B, C), they choose teams in the following order: A-B-C-C-B-A-A-B-C-C-B-A... etc. - it's more fair, I think, because the starting order is not so important in this system (if you use A-B-C-A-B-C-A-B-C, the player A has a too strong position). What do you think?

Yes, that sounds good. If we had, say, five players, we'd just pick two teams each and ignore the two left over. This competition would be a lot easier if the USSR still existed. I'd go them. True! But the Red Machine that is now just Russia is still pretty formidable - they're not a bad bet, I shouldn't think! I don't suppose you're expressing any interest in playing Fantasy Olympic Ice Hockey, are you? ;D

Cool, that's three. Anyone else?
Please, could anybody of you, native speakers, start a new thread, with a first post explaining the rules (preliminary, changeable version)? My English is not proper for that, I'm not able to express precisely and I make mistakes, so it would be better if the rules were written in a good language.
By which I mean - we don't have to start picking the teams now, and we don't need to have an exact "pointing" system now, we can adjust it later, after a deep discussion. What we need is to have enough players, have good rules for team-picking, and have enough time to realise the team picking itself. After all, picking the teams will be the only "role-playing" part of the game, the rest would be only calculating the points, so we have to do it properly. I think.
By the way. If we agree on the "ABCCBAABC" rule (I don't say it's best, it was just a suggestion), we have to define the ABC. Three systems come to my mind: 1. Alphabetical order (nickname, or real name, or real surname?) 2. Age (oldest or youngest starts?) 3. "First-come, first-served" basis (Simey, Jan, Doomy, Black Cat so far?) 4. Anything else?

Oh, come on! There're 8 teams in the Women's tournament, so that's two teams for each of us. I pick Canada AND the USA. ;D

OK, we'll give you 1 extra point for this just to make you satisfied. And now back to the men's tournament.
