The dredded section 42 was not an issue with any of the playtesters. Maybe they didnt use dice? Your comments are enough for us issue a second edition of the book and downgrade the jump slightly in sec 42 as well as boosting the jump and swimming skills base levels a tad. Very kind comments Balgin. Ant just had an orgasm!

Section 42 isn't deadly in and of itself, it's the ones that immediately preceed it. On average, the swimming and jumping skills are going to be somewhere in the mid 30's (typicaly 33-37%). Calling for three jump checks in a row makes perfect sense, but failing any one of them has rather horrible consequences and salvation onl comes at the chance of a jump check with a skill penalty (taking it down below 20%). Three jump checks with a -20 penalty is just asking for failure . Alternatively, a single swimming check with a penalty (or an even bigger penalty that's likely to take it down below 0%) isn't too welcoming. Next time through I'll try to make a jumping swimming ranger with a maxed out tracking skill (for those -30 checks to be able to get to section 42) and see how I do . Or maybe they failed the tracking check and ended up crossing the river at another point. I must admit it wasn't 'till my 3rd or 4th playthrough that I even saw section 42. A few times after that I just followed the other bandit group since I'd have a higher overall survival chance.

Well I have completed the adventure. The ending really reminded me of the first Way of the Tiger book. I'm half expecting book 2 to begin with climbing down the outside of a tower, breaking in through a window, running down some stairs and throwing a ninja star at a guard to get away! Somehow section 42's not as deadly if you just swim it. My young ranger had disgustingly good ability scores but the highest this time were perception and endurance (especialy endurance - this lad was tough as ld boots. He could fail jump checks, fail swim checks and still keep moving). The spider run seems almost like the most rewarding path through the adventure but it seems less fun than some of the others. It almost seems a bit too magical but it's more that I miss out on some of the really fun stuff elsewhere like finding out the various things the other npc's are up to .
