I don't really have the time or energy to devote to creating a wildly different class, I liked Al's method of taking the class that works but tweaking the setting/ethos
Basically I wanted to carry on with a higher level BCS. However, I wanted to ensure it was relevant so not concerned with sommerlund. The idea is the same mage-like abilities and perview - this si not a priest class.
Simply, say they like to study the 'scientific' aspects of their religeon, hence there are some phycial compnent spells missing, and equivalents that are more spiritual seeming, but in the end they are the same spell manefest in different ways, and the mage will still be studious and interested in ther world, not promoting or serving a religious capacity unless called upon (Similar to a BCS mage becoming in service to their king)

To paraphrase Tolkien: Go not to sages for questions, for they will not only say both no and yes, they will use way too much time thinking and way too many blasted syllables to do so. Sorry to interrupt, but that deserves a: ;D
