Mapping is something I didn't even try for years. It's not necessary in LW, but it's helpful in some of the more maze-like FFs. I don't think I thought of making a map until I revisited my gamebook collection in my early twenties, and even then I only did it for Warlock. Maybe I would have thought of it sooner if I'd been an RPG aficionado; as it stands, it was actually console RPGs that tipped me off.

I mapped out things like Deathtrap Dungeon and Trial of Champions. Really only the dungeony ones could be mapped with any success as their playing size was limited. Forest of Doom was always the hardest to map for somereason.

Scorpion Swamp was the first I ever mapped. With the ability to backtrack into places you've already been, it's essential.

Yeah, that one encouraged you to map due to the structure to the swamp

because of the DS revival of the FF series. The what? I thought Wizard books were reprinting them. Many Fighting Fantasy books had more variety than the one true path approach. Lone Wolf was always much more freeform 'though. I enjoy them both in different ways.

Much (hopefully enjoyable) frustration arises as you unwittingly doom yourself to failure early on, but get no indication of where you've gone wrong, leaving trial and error as the only way to actually succeed. What? Didn't you ever learn the fighting fantasy rule? If they give you compass directions go north. If you can't go north, go east. If they give you physical directions then go straight ahead. If you can't go straight then go left. A few books (less thna a third) reverse this but they do it completely. It's always south, then west if you can't go south, or straight ahead and right (with aheavy preference for right). Using the fighting fantasy rule 75-80% of the time will get you through any Fighting Fantasy book. You just need to work out if it's a north and left bok or a south and right book (and most of them are north and left's). It's liek Starship Traveller. You automaticaly fail if you didn't visit both I Abail and Luff which unfortunately means missing out on so many fun encounters and different storyline possibilities it's horrendous.

Forest of Doom was always the hardest to map for somereason. Do you want the official Forest of Doom map? Yes, I have a complete map . I always found it quite easy to map but there's an official map out now too . The same goes for Deathtrap Dungeon and Trial of the Champions (although I never found them easy to map, or even tried, and the official maps have foreshortened hallways and corridors to make them fit on a single page of A4). I just had a good memory and a good sense of direction.

After taking a look, I see he's done a Forest of Doom NWN mod? Could be fun...if I owned NWN. I should buy it at some point.

After taking a look, I see he's done a Forest of Doom NWN mod? Could be fun...if I owned NWN. I should buy it at some point. If it's the one I played it has a few balance issues . Technicaly there are two Forest of Doom moduels for NWN1 but only one of them's finished. The other's more of a bad joke really. The main (complete) NWN1 Forest of Dom mod's map is relatively faithful (except, of course, you can backtrack). The monsters and encounters are somewhat less faithful. I'll get the maps up later but for now check the post attachments in this thread in my Deathtrap Dungeon game. www.customhobby.com/forum/index.php?topic=2522.0
