The Kai Discipline of Sixth Sense is a powerful one, allowing you to know when something is wrong, and to allow you to tell truth from lie.
Picture the scene...
You have journeyed with four other men. They appear to be a Knight of the White Mountain, a Priest of Kai, a Mercenary and a Merchant. You know you definitely travel with a Knight of the White Mountain. However, he may not be the one dressed up as a Knight! Even if undercover, you know a White Knight can speak only the truth. Meanwhile, you have heard one of your companions is a known compulsive liar, who cannot tell the truth at all! To make matters worse, you know one of your companions is a Helghast. These fell creatures will always try to confuse any conversation by alternating their speech, using absolute truth one time and total lie the next. Your final companion is an unknown - they could be who they appear to be, or an imposter, and they could lie or tell the truth as it suits their purpose! However, any normal person is incapable of being completely honest or completely dishonest all the time.
Your coach driver died a painful death last night, death by Helghast. You sit with your four companions and attempt to discover the truth. The conversation goes as follows:
Merchant: The knight was the last to see the driver alive! (To the Knight) You are the Helghast!
Knight (to the Merchant): By my oath, you have lied all night!
Merchant (to the Knight): No, you are the one who has lied all night!
Priest (speaking of the Knight): By Kai, I swear this man is a knight!
Merchant: Bah, you are no priest!
Mercenery: It is known a Helghast cannot say truth to an oath.
Priest: Then by my oath to Kai, I am a priest!
Knight: And I am a knight, by my oath!
Mercenery (to the Knight): You lie, I am the knight, undercover!
Merchant (to the Mercenery): No you aren't, I am!
So there you have it. As any good Kai Lord, can you use your Sixth (Common) Sense to solve this tangle of logic and discover the idendity of the evil do-er?
If you believe you have the correct answer, PM me the identifies of the four men and your reasons for assigning them so. For example: Knight - Helghast, Priest - Unknown, Merchant - Knight, Mercenary - Liar. Six points are available for correctly guessing the identities (two points for each for the first two correct, two points for getting the last two correct). There are a further four points available, one point per character for explaining why they are what you have nominated them as.
If you like, you can post wild guesses in this thread instead. Only one per person, but it could still net you some points!
So what are you waiting for! Figure out who is responsible for this dastardly crime!
Some helpful notes:
-This is, of course, a logic puzzle. Therefore, each person follows their rules even if they have no reason to know what they say is true/false.
-For the purposes of this puzzle, assume lies are the exact opposite of what is said. If a liar says that a Helghast must say truth to an oath, then the opposite is that a Helghast must say falsehood to an oath. The opposite of lying all night is telling the truth all night.
-The unknown person can genuinely be anything except a knight or Helghast or compulsive liar. However, they must consistently be that thing. A priest cannot also be a mercenary! They can consistently lie or tell the truth during the above conversation, but cannot be labeled as being a truth teller nor a compulsive liar all night.
-For the Helghast, it is alternating lines, and not alternating sentences/sttaements, that are lies and truth.
Please ask for any more clarifications here, hopefully the logic is watertight if you explore it! If not - bonus points for all!
Good luck!
